Overview:
The Cardiac Monitoring Specialist plays a crucial role in the Special Care Unit by overseeing cardiac rhythm monitoring, managing Meditech order entries, and performing limited patient care responsibilities.
This position involves interpreting rhythm changes and promptly communicating findings to the nursing staff, ensuring the maintenance of monitoring equipment, and executing various clerical tasks such as answering calls and replenishing supplies. Additionally, the specialist is responsible for acquiring and monitoring vital signs, reporting any irregularities to the nursing team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Vigilantly monitors up to 16 cardiac monitors, interpreting and documenting cardiac strips.
- Notifies healthcare providers and nursing staff of any abnormal readings, including vital signs.
- Assists in the transfer of patients as required.
- Provides basic emergency medical assistance or first aid when necessary.
- Reviews patient charts and medical orders.
- Communicates effectively with physicians, registered nurses, technicians, patients, and their families.
- Ensures accuracy in documentation within the Special Care Unit and telemetry logs.
- Responds to call lights in the absence of a registered nurse.
- Supports registered nurses with fundamental patient care tasks.
- Handles incoming telephone calls.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of patient rooms.
The specialist is also responsible for maintaining telemetry units, correctly applying telemetry devices to patients, conducting admission strips for all monitored patients, and performing rhythm strips every four hours. All documentation must be accurately placed in the patients' charts. Additionally, the specialist enters orders for new patient admissions and daily orders if the registered nurse is unavailable.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- New Mexico CNA certification or New Mexico EMS Intermediate License.
- BLS certification (AHA).
- Basic ECG rhythm recognition training within three months of hire.
- PEARS certification (AHA) within six months of hire.
- Previous experience as a CNA or EMS Intermediate is preferred.
- Prior experience as a monitor technician is advantageous.
