About Maybell Quantum Industries

Maybell Quantum Industries is a venture-backed startup of scientists, engineers, visionaries, and innovators designing and building the hardware that makes quantum science possible.

We are seeking an experienced Thermal Engineer to help us develop next-generation cooling infrastructure for quantum computers. Successful candidates will have a strong background in cryogenics and thermal engineering, with demonstrated ability to transfer commercial or academic research to fast-paced innovation, prototyping, and deployment.

Job Overview

This role involves driving the initial high-level design of large-scale cryogenic systems, focusing on thermal management from room temperature to sub-Kelvin temperatures.

Responsibilities:

  • High-Level System Design: Drive the initial high-level design of large-scale cryogenic systems, focusing on thermal management from room temperature to sub-Kelvin temperatures.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth research on potential solutions to specific cryogenic challenges, utilizing scientific literature and emerging technologies to inform design strategies.
  • Modeling and Simulation: Perform comprehensive analysis and modeling to evaluate and determine the best solutions, employing computational tools (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL, Python) for thermal and fluid dynamics simulations.
  • Solution Implementation: Design and plan the implementation of selected solutions, creating detailed specifications for development and deployment.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (cryogenic, mechanical, electrical, software) to ensure seamless integration of designs into fully functional products.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field; Ph.D. preferred.
  • 5-8 years of hands-on experience with liquid nitrogen and liquid helium systems, including designing, building, or significantly modifying cryogenic systems.
  • Proficiency in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics, with skills in designing mechanical systems that operate reliably at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Knowledge of material science, especially how materials behave at low temperatures, and experience with stress analysis under thermal contraction.
  • Familiarity with cryogenic equipment and instrumentation, including cryogenic thermometers and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), thermodynamic modeling, and material databases like REFPROP.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with creativity in developing innovative solutions to technical challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience writing technical reports and documentation.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and lead projects from concept to implementation.
  • Self-starter with the ability to drive results independently and adapt to new challenges and technologies.

Compensation

A competitive base salary range of $120,000 - $180,000 per year depending on experience and qualifications, with additional compensation in equity and bonus.
