Position Overview
As a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Electronics Specialist within the Instrument Development and Automation Laboratory team, you will be part of a skilled and innovative group comprised of engineers and technicians dedicated to creating advanced software and hardware solutions for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). This role emphasizes close collaboration with scientists utilizing NMR technology for their research endeavors.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage in research and development tasks, executing standard technical procedures that vary from routine to specialized under technical guidance.
- Work in laboratory environments equipped with specialized instrumentation, fume hoods, and glove boxes to facilitate research activities.
- Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, minor repairs, and modifications on NMR systems and helium liquefiers.
- Oversee the operation and monitoring of helium liquefiers.
- Conduct liquid helium and nitrogen (cryogen) fills.
- Manage cryogen orders, storage, and related documentation.
- Adhere to and promote safety practices within the laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists and vendors to resolve instrument-related issues.
- Communicate with internal scientists regarding fill schedules, maintenance plans, and repair updates.
- Document work instructions and resolutions to issues encountered.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma/GED with 8 years of relevant experience -OR-
- Technical Institute Graduate or relevant AA degree with 6 years of relevant experience -OR-
- BS/BA or higher in a scientific or engineering discipline with 4 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in maintaining and repairing electronic systems such as telecommunication devices and control systems.
- Familiarity with complex mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of basic components and concepts including microcontrollers and digital control systems.
- Proficiency in using pressure and vacuum gauges, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and spectrum analyzers, along with strong electromechanical skills.
- Ability to work safely within a 3 Tesla (30K Gauss) magnetic field, with successful screening for implanted magnetic particles.
Working Conditions
This position requires exposure to magnetic fields up to 3 Tesla (30K Gauss) and involves working with cryogens such as liquid nitrogen and helium.
Additional Information
This role is based on-site at the Richland campus.
