Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Electronics Technician to join our Instrument Development and Automation Laboratory team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. As an NMR Electronics Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting complex electronic systems, including NMR spectrometers, and collaborating with scientists to resolve issues and improve instrument performance.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and development activities, including standard technical procedures, under technical supervision.
  • Operate in laboratory workspaces equipped with fume hoods, glove boxes, and specialized instrumentation to conduct research.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot NMR and helium liquefier systems, including minor repairs and modifications.
  • Operate and monitor helium liquefiers.
  • Fill and manage liquid helium and nitrogen (cryogen) supplies.
  • Manage cryogen orders, storage, and documentation.
  • Ensure appropriate safety practices are adhered to.
  • Collaborate with scientists and vendors to resolve instrument issues.
  • Communicate with internal scientists regarding fill schedules, planned maintenance, and repair progress.
  • Document work instructions and issue resolutions.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED and 8 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • Technical Institute Graduate/relevant AA degree and 6 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • BS/BA or higher in science or engineering and 4 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience maintaining and repairing electronic systems, including telecommunication devices, control systems, and radio stations.
  • Experience with complex mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with basic component parts and concepts, including microcontrollers, radio frequency generators, and transceivers.
  • Ability to use pressure and vacuum gauges, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Ability to work within a 3 Tesla (30K Gauss) magnetic field.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Required exposure to magnetic fields up to 3 Tesla (30K Gauss). Work with cryogens (liquid nitrogen and helium).

This is an on-site role at the Richland campus.
