Position Overview

The Patient Access Apprentice serves as the primary point of contact for individuals seeking services at Southern Maine Health Care. This role requires outstanding customer service abilities to ensure a positive experience for all patients. Responsibilities include accurate patient registration, thorough insurance verification, and validation of medical necessity. The apprentice will identify and collect any amounts owed by patients, enter orders, and facilitate a seamless workflow of clinical, administrative, and clerical tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Secure patient signatures on consent and assignment forms, as well as relevant insurance denial notices.
  • Assist in arranging accommodations for patients with special needs.
  • Perform all tasks in accordance with established protocols and accuracy standards, while embodying the Champions of Care principles of Welcome, Listen, and Serve.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience in clerical healthcare roles is preferred, along with a background in customer service. Completion of a formal medical terminology course and customer service training is required within the first year of employment.
  • Familiarity with various insurance plans and their requirements, including worker's compensation, managed care, and Medicare/Medicaid, is advantageous.
  • Understanding of medical office procedures and insurance protocols is beneficial.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential for effective communication with patients and colleagues, both in person and via telephone.
  • Proficiency in the English language is required, with the ability to communicate clearly in both spoken and written forms. Knowledge of French is a plus.
  • Competence in using a personal computer for online data entry is necessary, along with skills in typing, faxing, and operating copiers.
