Job Summary:
The Sr. Underwriter will be responsible for reviewing and analyzing risks posed by employer groups requesting group health coverage and developing employer group-specific premium rates for all large group and self-funded products. The successful candidate will also assist with the development and implementation of procedures for monitoring the overall effectiveness of the underwriting function.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze employer group experience reports from internal and external sources to develop group-specific premium rates.
- Evaluate medical risk for employer groups and determine premium rates for prospective clients.
- Determine rates and fees for self-funded employer groups and procure stop loss quotations from outside insurance carriers.
- Collaborate with sales teams to participate in meetings and conference calls with employer groups, outside brokers, and consultants.
- Attend and participate in Pricing Strategy Council meetings to review Strategic Account prospects and renewals.
- Collaborate with other departments to implement new rates, rating methodologies, and applications.
- Perform implementation testing for changes to rating and workflow programs.
- Develop and maintain documentation on quote processes and underwriting guidelines.
- Document risk evaluation findings and maintain acceptable records for review and audit by regulatory authorities.
- Produce and maintain reports and reporting systems to monitor and assist in renewal and new business processes.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- 6-10 years of experience in underwriting in HMO or health insurance or related field with medical risk evaluation and financial analysis experience.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Requirements:
- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) proficiency.
- Project management skills.
- Problem-solving skills.
- SQL, VBA, and/or SAS proficiency.
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) proficiency.
