Position Overview:


Under the direct guidance of the laboratory supervisor, the Electrodiagnostic Specialist I is responsible for preparing patients and executing standard Electroneurodiagnostic (END) assessments; gathers essential data relevant to the interpretation of results.

Assists senior technologists or medical personnel with intricate recordings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts END assessments in EEG and at least one additional modality (EP, LTEM, NCV, PSG, or Intraoperative Neuromonitoring) under direct supervision, adhering to the laboratory's standards and protocols.
Accurately measures and applies electrodes promptly while ensuring appropriate impedances.

Exhibits proficiency in various electrode application techniques.


Records a thorough patient history by collecting relevant information from the patient, their records, and family members, including neurological symptoms and medications.

Confirms patient identity and ensures proper patient identification on all studies, maintaining confidentiality.

Assesses the patient’s understanding and willingness to cooperate.

Employs approved techniques to enhance patient cooperation and relaxation.

Adheres to departmental protocols regarding sedation.


Informs the patient and/or family about the testing procedure, communicating at a level suitable for the patient's age and cognitive ability.

Addresses patient needs while in the department, ensuring safety at all times.

Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate responses during emergency situations.

Ensures the electrical safety of both patients and staff.

Implements alternative methods or adjusts settings to achieve optimal recordings.

This may involve adjusting control settings on the equipment, utilizing additional electrodes, employing extra montages, and applying activation procedures.

Identifies artifacts (patient, instrumental, or environmental).

Documents, mitigates, or takes appropriate measures to monitor artifacts.

Demonstrates awareness of departmental infection control standards concerning patients, equipment, and electrodes.

Complies with institutional guidelines for managing infectious or hazardous materials.

Maintains equipment cleanliness and functionality.

Verifies proper calibrations and makes necessary adjustments.

Troubleshoots equipment issues and promptly reports them to the supervisor.

Exhibits strong interpersonal communication skills with patients, their families, lab personnel, physicians, and other hospital staff.


Demonstrates understanding of neuroanatomy, physiology, basic electronics, electrical safety, END instrumentation, pattern recognition, and various medical and pharmacological conditions that affect END procedures.

Possesses basic computer skills.

Reviews studies with the Technical Director and/or interpreting physician, implementing suggestions for quality enhancement.

Progresses to perform additional and advanced END procedures through supervised practice with increasing independence.

Handles clerical tasks as necessary, including scheduling procedures, archiving studies, and entering charges.

Enhances knowledge through participation in conferences, in-services, and independent study.

Performs other assigned duties.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of experience in conducting routine and complex EEG assessments.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience in performing Phase I and II Long-Term Epilepsy Monitoring.

Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.

Education

Associate Degree in Neurodiagnostic Technology or equivalent.

License, Certification, Registration

Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring Certificate within 6 months of hire OR Registered Evoked Potential Technologist within 6 months of hire OR Registered Nerve Conduction Study Technologist within 6 months of hire OR Polysomnographic Technologist Certificate within 6 months of hire OR Long Term Epilepsy Monitoring Certificate within 6 months of hire

Registered EEG Technologist Certificate

Basic Life Support required at hire

Additional Requirements:
Proficient in conducting routine and complex Electroencephalograms.

Proficient in performing clinical Evoked Potentials.

Proficient in executing Phase I and II Long-Term Epilepsy Monitoring.

Knowledgeable about medical and pharmacologic conditions affecting Neurodiagnostic Monitoring.

Must meet physical requirements for this role. Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Proficient with neurodiagnostic software applications.

Expected to perform routine and complex studies on patients of all ages, with indirect supervision.

Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
