Essential Qualifications

Applicants must possess one of the following: A valid license and current registration to practice as a practical nurse in New York State; OR

A limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State; OR

An application for a limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State must be on file. (This option is available only if you have been approved immediately after graduating from an accredited practical nursing program in New York State.)

Note: If appointed with either qualification "B" or "C," you are required to secure your license within one year from the issuance date of your limited permit, or actions may be initiated to terminate your employment.

All candidates are also required to hold a valid Driver's license. Proof of a valid motor vehicle operation license in New York State must be submitted upon appointment. Failure to maintain this license may result in removal from the position.

Responsibilities Overview

  • Continuously observe the health status of individuals at their designated worksite to identify any changes in condition or responses to treatments.
  • Recognize and report symptoms of illnesses and alterations in conditions to a physician or registered nurse, providing critical information for diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Measure and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration rates using appropriate medical instruments.
  • Administer all prescribed injectable, j-tube, and g-tube medications to designated individuals.
  • Oversee and manage g-tube and j-tube feedings, including necessary changes to g-tubes.
  • Execute catheterization orders, tracheostomy care, and perform deep oral and pharyngeal suctioning as required.
  • Assist individuals in the collection of urine, stool, and other specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Maintain accurate charts and records of treatments administered and the conditions observed.
  • Conduct inventory assessments of medical supplies and medications to identify needs for replenishment.
  • Carry out assigned "Direct Care" responsibilities.

Additional Information

This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Positions under the HELPS Program may be filled through a non-competitive appointment process, meaning no examination is required, but candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the role.

Upon a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to transition from non-competitive to permanent competitive employment status without the need for an examination.
  • The advertised salary includes the statutory hiring rate for ISU Grade 10, along with any applicable special salary adjustments.
  • Current New York State employees in a permanent competitive qualifying title may be eligible for a transfer to this position.
  • For CSEA positions, local bidding agreements will be honored.
  • Preference will be given to OPWDD employees affected by facility closures.
  • All OPWDD employees must maintain eligibility for full participation in Medicare and Medicaid programs, which is essential for continued employment.
  • Employees may qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).
  • Employees on long-term leave can apply for positions but must be able to return to work within fourteen (14) days and perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
