Job Summary:
As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases and conditions. Under the supervision of a physician, you will perform a range of diagnostic imaging procedures, including in vivo and in vitro therapeutic procedures utilizing radiopharmaceuticals. Your expertise will be essential in obtaining high-quality scan images, which will aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate patient exams/studies by retrieving and processing patient requisitions, reviewing requests for pertinent information, and obtaining patient history. Collaborate with physicians to ascertain the appropriateness of exams ordered and the best methods to facilitate desired results.
  2. Perform clinical imaging procedures/examinations using scanners and scintillation cameras, including SPECT, diagnostic studies on patients as prescribed by a physician, probe systems, and ancillary computerized equipment. Follow guidelines as detailed in protocols and utilize alternative methods due to unusual/unique circumstances or new instrumentation/procedures based on best judgment and expertise.
  3. Measure radioactivity using Geiger counters, Well counter, and scintillation detectors. Follow radiation safety techniques in the use and disposal of radioactive materials.
  4. Perform in vitro laboratory tests using test tubes, water baths, pH meters, scintillation counting equipment, centrifuges, special calculators, computers, dose calibrators, and other equipment.
  5. Perform all required quality assurance/control procedures.
  6. Use proper patient-to-instrument positioning techniques.
  7. Obtain and format accurate, fully labeled, and readable images/worksheet presentations. Archive and log all required studies for future reference/use on picture archiving and communication systems (PACS).
  8. Receive, survey, wipe, and monitor and document all shipments of radiopharmaceuticals to and from the Nuclear Medicine Department.
  9. Observe all legislative and organizational regulations. Prepare stock solutions of radiopharmaceutical materials, calculate doses, and inject/administer doses under the direction of a physician. Draw blood from patients, receive specimens, and accurately record amounts of radioactive material administered to patients.
  10. Perform radionuclide therapy procedures by strictly adhering to Department protocols and/or physician instructions.
  11. Prepare radionuclide therapy doses and perform all required documentation.
  12. Assist physicians in performing radionuclide therapy procedures.
  13. Demonstrate an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation process in delivery of services to patients of the age group served.
  14. Identify the impact of cultural diversity and lifestyle choices on patient condition and make accommodations for such differences.
  15. Utilize proper Body Mechanics.
  16. Document clinical activities and required image information in a timely, comprehensive, and accurate manner.
  17. Observe all organizational, regional, medical service area, and Diagnostic Imaging Department policies and procedures.
  18. Maintain standards of professional behavior established to enhance quality of service.
  19. Demonstrate effective communication skills.
  20. Demonstrate professional behavior in all interactions with patients and staff.
  21. Maintain equipment, supplies, and work area in accordance with department guidelines.
  22. May perform other duties as required and assigned.
