About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Scientist 2 to join our team at the Ohio Department of Agriculture. As a key member of our Molecular Diagnostics section, you will be responsible for performing complex molecular assays, preparing specimens for detection and identification of various pathogens, and participating in national disease surveillance programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complex molecular assays, including PCR, RT-PCR, and real-time PCR, requiring specialized knowledge, training, and judgment.
  • Prepare specimens for detection and identification of various pathogens, including viruses and other microorganisms.
  • Participate in national disease surveillance programs, including proficiency testing and validation of new molecular tests.
  • Conduct scientific research using molecular methodology and write SOPs and scientific reports.
  • Maintain accurate and complete laboratory record systems, including initial sample identification, log-in, and transfer of ID through test systems.
  • Receive test specimens, log in and enter sample identification and test requirements into the laboratory information management system (LIMS).
  • Prepare samples and follow standard operating protocols to perform various molecular diagnostic assays.
  • Enter results on proper forms and produce final computer-generated reports.
  • Assist Veterinary Bacteriologist and Veterinary Virologist in development and validation of new molecular tests and evaluation and interpretation of molecular test results.
  • Dispose of all biological material with appropriate decontamination procedures.
  • Appropriate and maintain control and reference materials for each molecular assay.
  • Order and maintain adequate inventory of reagents and other laboratory supplies for molecular diagnostics.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must have 42 months of pertinent laboratory experience commensurate with job duties or completion of undergraduate core coursework in a biological, chemical, natural, or physical science, or completion of a Master of Science core program in a biological, chemical, natural, or physical science.
