Job Summary

The Power Plant Operator will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the power plant under the direction of the Chief Engineer or designee. This includes assisting in the preparation of boilers, turbines, and equipment for inspection, cleaning, and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the start-up and shutdown of boilers and equipment as directed.
  • Lubricate machinery and equipment as assigned.
  • Monitor and report operational and safety issues to the control room operator and working foreman.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, including Confined Space Entry, Lockout/Tagout, and chemical safety.
  • Support other trades as needed and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Operate power plant-related tools and equipment, as well as computer systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on equipment and vehicles.
  • Drive college vehicles as assigned and maintain a clean and safe vehicle.
  • Participate in educational training and safety programs as required.
  • Fill in for control room operator positions as needed.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent trades school certification.
  • Minimum of six months experience in a power plant.
  • Current Massachusetts Second Class Fireman's License.
  • Ability to attain a First Class Fireman's License.
  • Valid driver's license and completion of college driving credentialing requirements.
  • Ability to understand and execute written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to fifty pounds.
  • Ability to bend, walk, stand, stoop, climb stairs and ladders, and safely move materials and/or equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to climb, operate rigging, and work in warm cramped, and confined spaces.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and other specifications.
  • Strong communication skills, including oral, written, and electronic.
  • Proficiency in accessing the internet, using the college email and calendar systems, the work order system, and trade-related database systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to use good judgment to take appropriate, independent action to carry out the primary functions of the job.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations for the safety of college employees, users, and property.
  • Clear understanding of the union contract and all college policies.
