Position: Direct Support Professional (DSP)

The role of a Direct Support Professional (DSP) involves working closely with individuals who have physical and/or intellectual disabilities. The primary goal is to assist these individuals in becoming integrated into their communities while ensuring they are in the least restrictive environment possible. A DSP also serves as an advocate, helping to communicate the needs, self-expression, and aspirations of the individuals they support.

Qualifications for the Position
  • Ability to perform First Aid/CPR.
  • Capability to observe and assess individual needs.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Willingness to learn and apply positive behavior modification techniques.
  • Experience in facilitating group activities and providing individual skill instruction.
  • Ability to write clearly and logically in English.
  • Understanding and empathy towards individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Knowledge of the principles of 'Everyday Lives' and Self-Determination.

Responsibilities of Direct Support Staff
  • Provide personal care and supervision to individuals.
  • Deliver services, support, and treatment as needed.
  • Participate in the development and execution of each Individual Support Plan (ISP).
  • Ensure safety and comfort in the living environment.
  • Respond to emergencies as required.
  • Document instructional needs and progress consistently.
  • Support individuals in self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills training.
  • Implement behavioral support plans to encourage positive behaviors.
  • Assist with independent living skills such as personal hygiene and meal preparation.
  • Teach social interaction skills necessary for workplace success.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with families and other service providers.
  • Transport individuals for community outings or appointments.
  • Assist individuals in accessing medical care and following health recommendations.
  • Utilize community resources to foster independence and integration.
Competencies Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Professional licensing if applicable.
  • Passage of State PCA Competency Test.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills relevant to the position.
Expectations
  • Ability to drive a passenger vehicle if necessary.
  • Annual negative TB skin test results.
  • Ability to obtain required clearances.
  • Willingness to pursue paid training opportunities.
