Job Title: Benefit Programs Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Benefit Programs Specialist to join our team at Virginia Jobs. As a Benefit Programs Specialist, you will play a critical role in determining the eligibility of individuals and families for various social services and government assistance programs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct interviews with applicants to determine their eligibility for assistance and re-determine their continuing eligibility.
  • Explain the nature of temporary assistance benefit programs and determine the reasons and need for assistance.
  • Process applications for financial assistance and diversion, and explain client responsibilities, rights, and program availability.
  • Evaluate the consistency and completeness of data secured, and where indicated, substantiate its accuracy.
  • Compute assistance plans and determine the need for and amount of allowances for special circumstance items.
  • Evaluate social factors such as education, work experience, and levels of social functioning.
  • Evaluate employability status and explore potential sources of income.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma supplemented with additional training and related work experience.
  • Working knowledge of practices of public service organizations, economic and basic human behavior, financial assistance programs, and eligibility requirements for social service assistance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to analyze information and determine from a variety of sources missing information and gaps.
  • Ability to use various types of automated technology to establish and maintain case records, access data, and manipulate data.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior training and work experience with Benefit Programs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience processing/screening applications for benefit programs.
  • Working knowledge of benefit programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, and/or TANF.
Special Requirements:
  • Subject to DMV/driving record check, pre-employment drug screen, CPS, and Criminal History Search.
  • Must be willing to work in community emergency shelter in the event of a natural disaster or emergency.
