Job Summary

The Unit Aide provides critical support to the nursing staff in the Operating Room. This role involves transporting patients safely, positioning assistance, running errands, cleaning, and stocking supplies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Transport patients safely to procedural areas and pre-op areas, correctly identifying patients by armband and reporting any delays to the charge nurse.
  • Demonstrate proper cleaning of suites between cases, restoring furniture to its proper position, and cleaning specialized surgical equipment according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Stock supplies in sub-sterile areas and scrub areas, maintaining par levels and reordering specialty supplies as assigned.
  • Apply principles of standard precautions at all times, safely solidifying and disposing of blood and bio-waste after each procedure.
  • Respond promptly to pages from peri-operative areas, run errands to other departments, and co-sign blood release forms in the Blood Bank.
  • Assist with patient positioning/moving in the OR under the direction of nursing staff, and assist with housekeeping duties to maintain cleanliness and order in the department.
  • Return equipment to its proper area after use, restock supplies in the department as needed, and identify correct specimens and documentation for frozen sections, Microbiology, and Cytology specimens.
  • Clean and make up patient stretchers and beds as needed, maintain the housecleaning closet and surgical-sub sterile area in an organized manner consistent with regulatory compliance standards.
  • Wash schedule board strips, utilize free time to wipe down equipment, and keep hallways clear.
  • Meet and exceed the expectations of patients and all other customers we serve, actively assist and support departmental activities to ensure operational and salary expenses are equal to or less than approved budget.
  • Understand the principles and concepts of Performance Improvement, look for opportunities and solutions for process improvements, and seek to improve job skills.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications

Minimum of High School or GED required, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, and basic computer knowledge to operate a PC, create/save/print documents, and input data.
