About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Surgical Technician Trainee to join our team at UNC Health. As a Surgical Technician Trainee, you will have the opportunity to learn and perform clinical rotations under the direction and supervision of a training instructor within an accredited Surgical Technology program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, self, and others.
  • Complete duties according to individual patient needs with full consideration of patient safety requirements.
  • Review physician preference lists, check supplies, and instruments required for each surgical procedure.
  • Implement appropriate instrument table setup, prepare, and maintain a sterile field throughout the surgical procedure.
  • Place equipment and supplies in the operating room and arrange equipment according to instructions.
  • Assist team members in placing and positioning patients on the table.
  • Hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon, hold retractors, cut sutures, and perform other tasks as directed by the surgeon during the operation.
  • Understand and comply with OR policy and procedures and protocols.
  • Put unused supplies and instruments away at the end of the case.
  • Assist with room turnover and clean up.
Requirements
  • Basic Life Support Certification required.
  • No education requirements, but other position qualifications must be met.
  • No professional experience requirements.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions from patients, physicians, family members, and other Rex staff.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions and to define problems, collect data.
