Job Summary:

An unlicensed caregiver who maintains a safe and clean environment for patients and healthcare team members. Transport patients with proper technique. Transport equipment, supplies, and specimens. Provide environmental sanitation as required.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Assist in preparing the unit, patient rooms, and beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfers, emergencies, or discharges. Provide hygiene care, which includes providing or assisting in bed baths, oral hygiene, hair care and shampoo, back care and rubs, perineal care, dressing patients, and changing bed linen.
  2. Prepare patients for meals, serve and remove food trays, and assist with meal or feeds patients. Distribute water and nourishment to patients. Perform other duties as assigned by the RN as patient care needs change. Orient patients and significant others to call lights, bed controls, side rail usage, bathrooms, phones, TV waiting areas, and visiting hours. Assist and accompany patients and their belongings (including personal property) in the admission, transfer, and discharge process. Answer patient call lights, anticipate patient care needs, and make rounds to assigned patients on an ongoing basis. Communicate with patients in a courteous and helpful manner. Establish and maintain communication with the healthcare team. Perform data collection and documentation of TPR, BP, wt, ht, I/O, activity, diet, and hygiene in an ongoing, timely, accurate, and concise manner.
  3. Demonstrate the use of good body mechanics and provide for patient safety when transferring, ambulating, turning, lifting, and positioning patients. Act appropriately in emergency situations. Perform routine treatments and patient care duties listed on the skills inventory form and under the direct supervision of the RN.
  4. Identify and report changes in the patient's condition to the RN within an appropriate time frame. Maintain verbal and written information in a confidential manner. Assist in straightening patient rooms, cleaning overbed tables and bedside stands, keeping patient care areas clean at the end of each shift. Collect and transport specimens for delivery to appropriate departments per hospital standards.
  5. Complete work orders for equipment that is out of service and leave a copy in the appropriate designated place/unit for follow-up. Adhere to Infection Control Policy, including but not limited to: a) demonstrate body substance precautions by wearing gloves and other protective attire to avoid body substance contact when appropriate; b) adhere to the KFHPW hand-washing policy; c) comply with the proper handling of waste; d) maintain a clean work area. Provide postmortem care under the direction of the RN. Demonstrate initiative and responsibility for improving skills and expanding knowledge through continuing education or on-the-job learning experience. Consistently demonstrate an appearance consistent with current KFHPW dress code policy.
Requirements:
  • Minimum one (1) year of acute care or extended care experience.
  • Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
  • Nursing Assistant Certificate (Washington) required at hire.
  • Basic Life Support.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of hospital experience.
  • Graduate of formal nursing assistant training program OR equivalent experience.
