Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Analytical Chemist to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. As a key member of our Environmental Chemistry Unit, you will be responsible for utilizing Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS) to analyze Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Key Responsibilities
  • Sample Analysis and Quality Control: Prepare and analyze samples for PFAS by LC/MS, ensuring quality control measures are performed and documented accurately.
  • Instrument Validation and Method Implementation: Oversee the setup, calibration, and validation of LCMS instruments, interact with vendors to learn and document proper operation, and optimize instruments and methods to meet criteria.
  • Data Management and Review: Review data results for accuracy, ensure preparation and analysis of samples meet EPA holding time, and perform data review and approval of results before expiration of holding times or assigned deadline.
  • Policy and Program Development: Create SOPs for the operation, maintenance, and safe operation of LCMS instruments, develop training sessions on techniques and best practices for LCMS analysis, and participate as a technical expert in construction or purchasing planning sessions.
  • Inventory Maintenance: Oversee maintenance of reagents and supplies, enter requisitions for supplies and standards, and maintain complete, timely, and accurate records of maintenance and inventory.
  • Health and Safety/Housekeeping: Consistently comply with DSHS Laboratory, local, state, and federal guidelines to ensure a safe functioning laboratory, minimize exposure to chemical hazards, and properly label all chemicals.
  • Administrative: Abide by attendance policies, notify Unit Director of all absences, and perform required agency training.
Requirements
  • Experience in operating Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS) systems.
  • Skill in instrument validation and method implementation procedures and developing required documentation such as standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Experience with data acquisition systems and skill in their use for preparing calibration curves for quantitation of samples, evaluation of QC parameters, and producing reports.
  • Experience performing and evaluating lab quality control and quality assurance activities.
  • Ability to set up computer spreadsheets to evaluate the recovery data and apply statistical means to set quality control limits.

This position requires a strong understanding of analytical chemistry principles, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
