Job Title: Laboratory Neuroscientist

This is a long-term contract position with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. The Laboratory Neuroscientist will collaborate with in-house bioinformaticists, biologists, and biochemists, and have opportunities to mentor junior scientists.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the development of secondary neuroscientific questions stemming from antibody discovery research
  • Present work at national conferences and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals
  • Draft and maintain standard operating procedures for antibody screens and testing
  • Maintain electronic biospecimen handling and testing logs
  • Schedule regular maintenance of equipment logs and maintain performance logs
  • Ensure that reagents are made correctly and that expired reagents or defective products are replaced to ensure validity of results
  • Sacrifice, perfuse, and cryopreserve mouse brain tissue
  • Immunostain rodent and/or NHP brain tissue with human CSF, serum/plasma, and commercial antibodies
  • Preparation of presentation slides and figures for outside investigators
  • Assist in troubleshooting and calibrating various laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data; prepare summaries and reports based on results and findings
  • Primary cell isolation and culture (neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and mixed cell culture)
  • Perform experiments on samples according to protocols
  • Logging of assay and experimental results in electronic laboratory notebook (Lab Archives)
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or related fields
  • Familiarity with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and working in a CLIA-certified lab
  • Experience in rodent handling and husbandry
  • Expertise in cell line and primary cell culture
  • Expertise in small rodent sacrifice, perfusion, cryopreservation, and paraffin embedding
  • Expertise in immunostaining: immunofluorescence, DAB, and colorimetric
  • Animal Handling: Non-human primates
  • Experience with Software such as: Powerpoint, MS Project, MS Access
