Job Summary

The Cytologist is a critical member of our team at Altru Health, responsible for detecting, differentiating, and diagnosing the presence or absence of disease in gynecological and non-gynecological samples. This role assists the Pathologist with various fine needle aspirates, ensuring accurate and timely diagnoses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform microscopic examinations on gynecological and non-gynecological specimens, differentiating and identifying all cells on the slides using established cytologic criteria.
  • Detect, select, and clearly mark cells most representative of pathological processes present and prepare a provisional diagnosis for all gynecological and non-gynecological cases referred to the cytology supervisor or pathologist.
  • Interpret the acceptability of specimens received for testing, communicate correct specimen collection, transport requirements, and specimen unacceptability issues to appropriate caregivers in a timely manner, ensuring documentation is completed according to standard operating procedure.
  • Assist in the collection of Fine Needle Aspirates following standard operating procedure.
  • Exercise initiative and judgment in investigating, troubleshooting, and resolving QC failure, inform next-level authority as necessary, and document all actions taken.
  • Prepare a final diagnosis using established cytologic terminology for gynecologic specimens reported as within normal limits.
  • Perform accessioning, routine staining, and coverslipping of cytologic slides.
  • Maintain clear and concise specimen identification throughout the entire analytical process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
Certification and Education
  • Cytotechnologist (CT) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 12 months of start date.
  • Meet CLIA education and experience standards for Cytotechnologist.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 1 year of related experience.
Physical and Working Conditions
  • Work in a laboratory setting with frequent standing, walking, and reaching.
  • Occasional stooping, bending, and twisting.
  • Continuously handle, finger, and feel objects.
  • Continuously see and hear.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
Driving Requirements
  • Infrequent driver.
