Description

The City of Sherwood Police Department is actively seeking to establish a pool of qualified candidates for current and future Lateral Police Officer positions.

As a certified Law Enforcement Officer, you will engage in essential law enforcement and crime prevention activities, including investigations, report writing, and patrolling to uphold state and local regulations. Successful candidates will also manage police program areas that may necessitate specialized training, including conducting training sessions and orientations for volunteers, students, and newly assigned personnel regarding various policies, procedures, and best practices.

Shift work is a requirement for this position.

COMPENSATION AND INCENTIVES:
Lateral candidates may receive a base salary reflective of their experience, up to the maximum salary rate. Additionally, Police Officers may qualify for extra compensation for holding advanced professional certifications and higher education degrees as follows:
  • Intermediate DPSST Certificate - 4%
  • Advanced DPSST Certificate - 8%
  • Associate Degree - 3%
  • Bachelor's Degree - 6%
Additional premiums include:
  • Residency within Sherwood City limits - $125 per month
  • Fluency in Spanish - $250 per month

Examples of Duties

This description encompasses the primary essential and auxiliary duties associated with the position, but does not include all occasional tasks that may be similar or related.

Essential Duties:
1. Patrol streets, businesses, and residential areas to enforce traffic and criminal laws. Issue warnings or citations for violations. Conduct security checks for suspicious individuals or vehicles.

2. Respond to various calls, including major crimes, civil complaints, thefts, assaults, and family disputes, taking appropriate actions. Direct traffic at accident/crime scenes as necessary. Administer CPR/First Aid as required.

3. Maintain written records and prepare reports regarding investigations, which are reviewed by supervisors and utilized for crime prevention, prosecution, and office activities. Testify in court as necessary.

4. Conduct preliminary case/incident investigations and related follow-up activities; gather and preserve evidence; interview and take statements from victims and witnesses; interrogate suspects; and prepare related reports and logs.

5. Maintain effective working relationships with adjacent law enforcement agencies. Provide assistance and backup as requested. Share pertinent information with other law enforcement agencies, social service organizations, the media, and the public regarding ongoing investigations, department policies, officer safety information, and criminal activity.

6. Engage in crime prevention activities, including surveillance patrols and public information dissemination. Participate in public relations initiatives that may involve speaking to community and school groups, as well as public service efforts.

7. Make arrests; conduct searches; transport and release prisoners.

8. Maintain cooperative working relationships with City staff, other organizations, and the general public.

9. Adhere to all safety rules and procedures for work areas.

Auxiliary Duties: Assist other staff as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain department-issued equipment. Stay proficient by attending training sessions and meetings, reviewing materials, and collaborating with others in areas of responsibility. Keep work areas clean and orderly.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must currently possess a Basic Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training "DPSST" certification; OR
  • Currently possess another equivalent local, state, or federal certification as a Police Officer; AND
  • Completed a Field Training Program; AND
  • Possess at least one (1) year of full-time equivalent (2080 hours) work experience as a certified law enforcement professional. Required work experience must be recent and must not have occurred greater than 12 months prior to application submission.
Additional Requirements/Qualifications/Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must possess a certification as a police officer by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be free of felony convictions in any jurisdiction. Dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any branch of the military typically results in disqualification.
  • Applicants must pass an oral exam, background investigation, physical agility test, medical exam, and psychological evaluation prior to appointment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license in the State of Oregon and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Previous college-level training or additional experience in law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of the Sherwood community and surrounding areas.
  • Additional training related to police equipment or operations, e.g., first aid, CPR, hazardous materials, firearms training, LEDS, etc.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish/English).
Knowledge of: Thorough police practices and procedures, investigative methods and techniques, federal, state, and local laws, report writing, firearm use, and safety precautions.
