GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under the guidance of a technical supervisor, the incumbent will execute radiographic procedures in designated areas at a technical level that does not necessitate constant oversight. The role involves a variety of technical tasks that require independent judgment, creativity, and initiative to apply ionizing radiation for diagnostic imaging. The incumbent will take responsibility for assigned areas or procedures as necessary and will serve as a Clinical Instructor for student radiographers. Staff may be required to rotate among various imaging clinics as needed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Conducts tasks such as transporting, transferring, immobilizing, and positioning patients.
2. Determines and selects appropriate technical factors; operates all necessary equipment; captures and processes images; accurately identifies images with patient I.D. and relevant markers to ensure high-quality diagnostic images.
3. Ensures radiation safety in accordance with established standards; assists physicians in administering contrast media, practices sterile techniques, and provides first aid when required.
4. Instructs, advises, and supports Radiologic Technology students in performing imaging exams, maintaining sterile techniques, and ensuring proper supply stocking in imaging rooms. Assumes the role of Clinical Instructor for student radiographers.
5. Participates in research and Quality Improvement initiatives.
6. Utilizes radiology information systems and hospital information systems integrated with the Radiology Department to maintain up-to-date patient data, including scheduling and tracking, along with relevant image services and maintenance duties.
7. Maintains cleanliness and organization of assigned areas.
8. Rotates within the department, its divisions, and all off-site clinics, by shifts as required; collaborates with all personnel to foster a harmonious work environment.
9. Explains procedures to patients, considering their physical and emotional needs while upholding ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.).
10. Attends staff meetings, in-services, and maintains appropriate continuing education units (CEUs) in compliance with state licensure and certification requirements.
11. Instructs and assists with the orientation of new technologists regarding imaging procedures and departmental policies.
12. Reports equipment malfunctions and necessary repairs to appropriate personnel.
13. Collects supplies from designated storage areas, stocks, and maintains adequate supplies for assigned locations.
14. Exercises independent judgment, creativity, and initiative under pressure in various situations without the need for constant supervision.
15. Performs other related duties as necessary (reception, image services, and escort functions).
Qualifications:
1. Must have graduated from an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
2. Must possess a valid Massachusetts license as a Radiologic Technologist in the category of Radiography.
3. To perform mammography, the incumbent must hold a valid Massachusetts license in the category of mammography in addition to radiography.
4. Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or an equivalent organization.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
1. Proficient in operating and utilizing all types of x-ray and related equipment and supplies.
2. Effective interpersonal skills to interact with patients and colleagues who may be experiencing physical and/or emotional stress.
3. Ability to read and interpret requisition forms.
4. Capable of comprehending complex information and exercising independent judgment in various situations.
5. Must communicate effectively to transfer knowledge and skills to students and new employees.
6. Understanding of the Radiology Information System and Hospital Information Systems that integrate with the Radiology Department concerning patient information.
7. Physically capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Prepared to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as needed.
2. Works in a large open area in radiology, which may be noisy and subject to temperature and humidity variations.
3. Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation when adhering to proper safety protocols.
4. Continuous standing and lifting required.
5. Exposure to human waste and disease.
6. Significant stress from interacting with a diverse range of hospital staff, patients, and families.
