Sacramento, California, United States Department of Transportation Full time

Job Description and Duties

Will Consider Attorney III

Are you looking to join a dynamic legal practice providing full-service support, advice, and representation to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)? The transportation sector touches all aspects of daily life and the economy, in California and nationally. Caltrans is responsible for 50,000 lane miles of highway and employs 22,000 people throughout the state. To support such an extensive enterprise, Caltrans' Legal Division is comprised of nearly 127 attorneys in five offices statewide Sacramento/HQ, Oakland, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Fresno. We are looking for well-qualified and highly motivated individuals at our Sacramento Legal Office. Will consider Attorney III.

Practice Areas

Our attorneys represent Caltrans in State and Federal courts in all phases of litigation, including trial and appellate work. They also advise and assist Caltrans in delivering projects. Junior attorneys are assigned to a practice group and trained in all aspects of the practice. They are given early exposure to discovery and trial preparation as well as legal research and drafting pleadings. Mid-level attorneys are expected to handle all aspects of a case including taking and defending depositions, taking cases to trial as first or second chair counsel, and appellate work. All employees receive training in Department policies and practices along with continuing legal education.

Benefits

The Legal Division is a public entity law office which offers a supportive and challenging work environment where you will be given substantial responsibility at an early stage of your career. The job also offers excellent health, dental, vision and pension plan benefits.

Eligibility

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Attorney IV or Attorney III exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. To apply for the exam, please click and search by typing in the classification title.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Driver's License is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required.

Using the Job Description and Duties and the Duty Statement clearly demonstrate how your education, training, experience, and skills meet the Criteria and qualifies you for the position. Resumes and cover letters will not take the place of the SOQ. Failure to include and complete the SOQ may result in disqualification for interview.

Working Conditions

Position located in Sacramento, Sacramento County. While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. However, due to periodic problems with the heating and air conditioning, the building temperature may fluctuate. Will have to perform work duties in different court rooms throughout the state and therefore, this position does require travel.

Telework may be available, but time in office will be required.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
