Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in 19th and 20th Century Literary Studies

The Department of English at the University of Iowa seeks applications for a vibrant scholar and educator specializing in any domain of Anglophone literary and cultural studies. We particularly encourage candidates who adopt transnational and interdisciplinary perspectives. This is a tenure-track role, with responsibilities that include teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, typically involving a standard load of two courses per semester. The position also entails committee duties that support the governance of the department and the university.

Department Profile:

Situated in a recognized UNESCO City of Literature, the Iowa English Department is a lively academic community with around 900 undergraduate majors, alongside an MA/PhD program in Literary Studies and an MFA in Nonfiction Writing. Our undergraduate curriculum embraces a fully hybrid model for teaching literature and creative writing, featuring courses such as Queer Poetry and Poetics, African American Media Culture, and Critical Race Theory. Additionally, we provide undergraduate creative writing workshops across various genres. Many faculty members engage with the entire spectrum of this curriculum. Our faculty comprises 36 tenured or tenure-track members, including recent recipients of numerous prestigious awards and fellowships, such as Guggenheims, Fulbrights, and major grants from the NEA and NEH. The University of Iowa offers substantial internal support for faculty research and creative endeavors, including pre-tenure teaching releases, post-tenure development leaves, grant and fellowship workshops, and funding for research and conference travel.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience.
