Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Landfill Attendant - Waste Management Specialist. This role will be responsible for performing manual work in the maintenance of the County landfill, dumpster sites, department facilities, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform various unskilled, manual tasks involved in the maintenance of department facilities, transfer station, and equipment.
  • Perform routine grounds keeping work, including mowing grass, removing weeds, picking up debris, etc.
  • Perform general building maintenance and cleaning; stocks supplies.
  • Operate a lawn mower, weed eater; use various hand and power tools, maintenance and cleaning supplies.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with all County policies and procedures, standards of quality and safety, and all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Interact and communicate with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, other County personnel, and the general public.
  • Attend training, meetings, etc., as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Assist in cleaning around dumpster sites.
  • Clean garbage trucks and other equipment.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Sanitation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of Landfill Attendant - Waste Management Specialist.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
  • Ability to safely operate lawn mowers and other equipment necessary for assigned duties.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry; ability to work effectively despite occasional exposure to extreme weather and temperatures, wetness/humidity, machinery hazards, traffic hazards, dust, fumes, above-average noise, odors, smoke, vibrations, hazardous waste, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic grounds maintenance methods.
  • Ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.
  • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
  • Ability to perform required mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders, equipment manuals, and other materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
  • Ability to prepare simple records with accuracy and in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with co-workers and supervisor.
  • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from high school or GED and some experience operating equipment and dealing with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
