Transportation Safety Practice Director

Toole Design is a leading planning, engineering, and landscape architecture firm specializing in multimodal transportation. We are seeking an experienced Transportation Safety Practice Director to lead our safety practice nationwide. The successful candidate will have a strong background in multimodal transportation safety and experience or a desire to become a national leader in safety for vulnerable road users.
This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week and provides employees with the flexibility to work from home up to 2 days per week. Our Seattle office is conveniently located in the heart of Seattle's Business District, blocks from the Pike Place Market, Seattle Art Museum, Central Public Library, and Waterfront. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit or ferry. RapidRide lines C, D, and E stop right in front, and multiple Sound Transit light rail and Sounder Commuter rail lines are a short walk to the office. Bike lanes are close by on 2nd and 4th avenues.
The estimated salary range for this position is $110,000-$170,000 annually. Candidates who qualify for the higher end of the pay range typically surpass all stated qualifications, demonstrating exceptional expertise, advanced technical skills, and a strong, positive reputation within the industry.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the strategic vision for the success and growth of our safety practice
- Oversee one of our core national service areas as a Director-level position
- Work closely with our Research and Data Science Practice Leads to keep our work on systemic safety analysis, road safety audits, and countermeasure selection at the leading edge of the industry
- Manage projects across the country independently and regularly collaborate with a team of civil engineers, planners, landscape architects, researchers, and data scientists to ensure that our Active Transportation Plans, design guidelines, and roadway design projects reflect safe systems principles
Requirements
- At least 15 years of experience in the transportation industry, with a solid understanding of multimodal transportation safety and experience or a desire to become a national leader in safety for vulnerable road users
- A bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering, urban planning, or a related field
- At least 3 years of leadership experience (managing or leading teams toward a common goal) and 5 years serving in a project management role
- Experience with proposal writing, grant writing, and/or business development
- Strong knowledge of proven safety countermeasures, crash modification factors, descriptive crash analysis, and developing and implementing strategies that help public transportation agencies embrace a strong safety culture
