Educational Support Specialist

PRIMARY FUNCTION: This role is dedicated to delivering educational assistance and personal support to students with unique needs, working closely under the guidance of the classroom instructor.
REPORTS TO: Principal
SALARY SCHEDULE: G-5
WORK DAYS: 200
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Education Level: High School Diploma
Preferred: Associate Degree
- Experience, Skills, and Certification:
- Must fulfill Highly Qualified criteria for state licensure, which includes:
2 years of college course credits;
Associate's degree; or
Passing score on the state-approved assessment.
Proven ability to reinforce concepts initially presented by the teacher and to assist students with enrichment, remedial, and independent tasks as outlined by the instructor.Familiarity with general office software applications and internet usage.Effective oral and written communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues.Must possess the physical capability, dexterity, endurance, and temperament to work with students with special needs.NOTE: For specific student groups, this position may necessitate specialized training (e.g., SID/PID, autism); the capacity to lift and manage students weighing over 100 pounds; the use of specialized equipment; and the ability to assist with personal activities such as feeding, toileting, and diapering. These requirements will be discussed during the interview process.
PREFERRED:
- Experience in setting up and operating instructional equipment and materials.
- Experience in managing children's behavior.
- Experience working with children with special needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Supports instruction for assigned students under the direction of the teacher.
- Prepares educational activities under the supervision of the Classroom Teacher, including bulletin boards, displays, and related classroom materials.
- Participates in professional development training programs.
- Assists the Classroom Teacher with non-instructional tasks such as supervising students during meals and personal care routines to ensure their safety.
- Provides support to individuals and small groups of students in various educational environments, including media centers and community-based settings.
- Handles clerical responsibilities as directed by the Classroom Teacher or Principal.
- Assists with physical education instruction as needed.
- Supports students with daily care routines such as feeding and toileting as required.
- Performs additional duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Incumbents will be considered 'at will.' Compensation will be determined based on the Grade established by Human Resources and relevant experience. The work calendar follows the classified 200-day schedule.
NON-ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
A responsibility is deemed 'non-essential' if:
- It is shared among multiple employees in the role; or
- It could be performed by an employee in another position within the workgroup.
Note the responsibility number from the list in the 'Duties and Responsibilities' section for those tasks that may be considered 'non-essential' based on this definition.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY DEMANDS:
Most positions in the District entail physical and sensory demands that can be categorized as follows:
OFFICE: Employees in this category typically work in a standard environment. They have some control over their sitting, standing, or moving time. Occasional lifting or pulling of equipment or supplies may be required, along with bending or stretching. Frequent use of computers and standard office equipment is necessary, which includes reading, listening, writing, or speaking. There are minimal exceptional physical or sensory demands.
