Behavioral Support Technician in Educational Settings

The Behavioral Support Technician (BST) with Educational Assistant Responsibilities is tasked with delivering direct assistance to students with unique needs, focusing on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) methodologies, while also fulfilling various educational assistant duties within the school environment.
This role is vital in improving the educational experience and social growth of students with varied requirements, ensuring a secure and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
Reporting Structure:
Reports to the Program Manager, Department for Specialized Instruction.
Compensation Structure:
Grade 10
Work Days: 200
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification is required. Preferred: Associate degree from an accredited institution.
Experience and Skills: Required: Experience supporting students with special needs, ideally in an educational context. Knowledge of ABA principles and behavioral intervention techniques. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities. Capacity to work effectively within a collaborative team. Patience, empathy, and a sincere commitment to assisting students with diverse needs. Capability to engage with clients of various ages, skill levels, and behaviors. Valid Driver's License and dependable transportation for travel between locations.
Key Responsibilities:
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Support:
Implement tailored ABA programs as designed by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to meet the behavioral and educational objectives of students.
Provide individualized or small-group instruction to aid students in reaching their behavioral and academic goals, encompassing self-help skills, communication abilities, and social interactions.
Document and analyze data on student progress, behaviors, and responses to interventions. Collaborate closely with BCBAs, Autism Specialists, educators, and other professionals to develop and adjust behavior plans and strategies. Embrace constructive feedback to enhance skills and knowledge. Assist in the development of program plans and instructional materials.
Educational Assistant Duties:
Support educators and students with various classroom responsibilities, including classroom management, instructional assistance, and resource preparation.
Facilitate the inclusion of students with special needs, ensuring their access to the curriculum and promoting a positive learning environment.
Provide physical, emotional, and academic support for students with disabilities or exceptional needs as necessary. Adapt to individualized education programs (IEPs) and collaborate with special education personnel to ensure student success.
Behavior Management:
Employ behavior management techniques, reinforcement strategies, and de-escalation methods as outlined in student-specific behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
Encourage and monitor positive behavior and social interactions among students. Respond to crisis situations with a calm and professional demeanor. Maintain confidentiality regarding all matters, particularly concerning student behaviors. Report behavioral issues to the BCBA and other relevant staff members.
Communication and Teamwork:
Foster open communication with classroom teachers, special education staff, and other team members to ensure coordinated support for students.
Collaborate with autism program support staff (BCBAs and Autism Specialists) to guarantee students receive effective behavioral supports. Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and stay informed on best practices. Contribute to the creation of progress reports and student evaluation processes.
Safety and Inclusivity:
Promote a safe and inclusive educational environment where all students feel respected and valued. Adhere to school policies and procedures related to safety, confidentiality, and student welfare.
Assist with students' mobility and personal care needs as required, including toileting and feeding. Support classroom teachers with non-instructional duties such as breakfast, snack, lunch supervision, and ensuring the safety of students during routines.
Additional Responsibilities:
Other duties may be assigned as necessary for the effective operation of the organization.
Physical and Sensory Demands:
This position involves spending significant time in a classroom or related educational environment, which may include prolonged periods of standing or walking, frequent bending, stooping, or stretching, and occasional lifting of materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
Employees may also be required to sit or stand for extended periods without control over rest periods.
Must possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel between schools.
