Job Summary

The Study Abroad Coordinator is responsible for providing a broad range of support to the Center for International Programs (CIP). This position promotes the value of international education and the appreciation of cultural differences through the development and supervision of study abroad programming while providing University students opportunities to learn and appreciate different cultures and develop skills to successfully interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Counseling students on university-approved study abroad programs, policies, and regulations, including conveying information on admission requirements, registration procedures, and transfer credit practices.
  • Facilitating programs and activities, including outreach efforts related to the study abroad fair and pre-departure orientation, organization of student events, coordination with related campus departments and partner organization, marketing of programs, reporting on statistics, etc.
  • Collaborating and communicating with appropriate departments and partner organizations.
  • Designs marketing strategy and materials for promoting current study abroad opportunities to students; Assembles and prepares publicity, media and materials for meetings, retreats, training, workshops, seminars, conferences, and special events in coordination with communication department.
  • Maintaining student records and program files and managing applications in International Student Services database (TerraDotta).
  • Evaluating study abroad applications for admission consideration.
  • Assists in developing activities for "International Education week" and other projects; develops additional opportunities for promoting international study and cultural exchange; coordinates social activities for International exchange students
  • Supports faculty with the implementation and administration of current programs, including developing budgets, and scheduling travel; administers Exchange program opportunities, including serving as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
  • Administers study abroad-related scholarships, collecting applications and designating yearly funds; Serves as the campus representative for multiple scholarships; coordinates with Registrar's Office, Business Office, and Financial Assistance Office to ensure student accounts are reconciled
  • Serves as the university point of contact for students and faculty; coordinates necessary support; handles for basic student inquiries, and direct students to the appropriate campus community partner
  • Hires, guides and supervises the student workers and designates study abroad-related tasks
  • Performs other duties as needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university required; Master's Degree preferred
  • 2 to 3 years of experience working with international students and/or international education programs in a higher education institution; or similar experience preferred
  • Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance; or have a self-reliant source of transportation to conduct business on a daily basis
  • Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must be able to be affirmed as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) (must be a US citizen or permanent resident)
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; an ability to work effectively with communities across the university
  • Must have high ethical standards and a strong sense of confidentiality; ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines; thrive in a complex work environment; displays solid problem solving and interpersonal skills; works well independently and as part of a team
  • Must have strong self-judgment abilities to assist in the preparation of department policy information. Use discretion to complete work assignments. Initiative is frequently required to complete work assignments. Decisions are made regarding policy interpretation and individual work priorities
  • Must have the ability to demonstrate a capacity for leadership, and the commitment to work collaboratively with a diverse and dynamic community; must have knowledge and sensitivity to multicultural/international concerns, including legal, ethical and emotional student development, in a university community environment
  • Must have the ability to demonstrate intermediate skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Uses various software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports;
  • Should be knowledgeable about current trends in International Student Programs and international education and demonstrate the ability to design and implement innovative programs and services that effectively meet the needs of those being served
  • Knowledge of the legal, ethical, mental health, student development, and management and higher education aspects of international students is preferred
  • Multilingual Highly Preferred (language other than English with the ability to understand and to make one's self understood to non-English speaking individuals; Spanish and/or Arabic is preferable)
Working Conditions

Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business.

While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner.

Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
