Job Title: Sr Project Engineer

Progress Rail Services is seeking a highly skilled Sr Project Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing complex engineering projects.

Job Summary:

The Sr Project Engineer will lead the development of engineering projects, ensuring timely completion, and meeting quality standards. This role requires strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop comprehensive project plans and technical solutions for engineering development projects.
  • Perform testing and troubleshooting of designed components or activities.
  • Work with other engineering groups, suppliers, purchasing, and plant personnel to modernize and upgrade products and support build programs.
  • Provide production and ongoing mechanical expertise for specification, design, and development of assigned components/projects.
  • Measure project performance using appropriate project management tools and techniques.
  • Work with suppliers, manufacturing, and quality engineers to resolve manufacturing and quality issues to keep product delivery on time.
  • Assist in the definition of project scope and objectives; maintain relationship with relevant stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with functional managers to acquire resources to execute project tasks/deliverables.
  • Generate correct engineering documentation to support production activities; write documents to provide engineering authority and to release technical data and designs.
  • Direct drafting resources to complete drawing work order tasks to meet production schedules.
  • Review technical documents, simulations, and analyses; provide guidance on design iterations.
  • Create test instructions based on customer requirements and applicable international standards or regulatory requirements.
  • Direct testing to perform validation testing, analyze data, verify performance against requirements, and document results.
  • Specify/approve substitutions when required; deal with parts obsolescence issues and provide guidance.
  • Implement engineering changes by writing, issuing, reviewing, and closing out change documents.
  • Define and control locomotive requirements and specifications.
  • Support customer inquiries with technical inputs and controls.
  • Conduct order meetings, develop resource estimates, manage weekly production order tasks, and manage team to meet requirements.
  • Participate in determining solutions of engineering-related product problems (root cause).
Requirements:
  • 7+ years of experience in product development of complex assemblies or programming as appropriate to the position.
  • Engineering experience with a focus on design, materials, R&D, and manufacturing and/or programming as related to the rail industry.
  • Knowledge of diesel engines and engine components.
  • Experience in Project Management tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in development and design needed to meet railway industry needs.
  • Proven project management experience with engineering development of complex engineering solutions.
  • Experience in advanced data analytics used in root cause investigations and new product design.
  • High analytical ability.
  • High level of interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with Association of American Railroads (AAR) specifications and regional industry standards a plus.
  • Experience with ISO requirements.
Work Environment:

This role is located in LaGrange, IL, and may require occasional travel to industrial environments. The position involves working in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment, which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery, and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE.
