Lead Coastal Engineering Scientist

The selected candidate will become a vital member of a high-achieving team that delivers comprehensive numerical modeling and engineering solutions addressing coastal engineering and flood risk issues.
This role will be pivotal in guiding a multi-disciplinary modeling and data solutions team, fostering innovative projects and products in flood risk management, mentoring less experienced staff, and bolstering our expanding Emergency Management and Response division.
The responsibilities of the candidate will include:
- Providing technical guidance on various national coastal engineering initiatives focused on flood risk, numerical modeling, design, and mapping.
- Executing intricate engineering modeling and calculations for the design or assessment of projects situated in coastal settings.
- Conducting numerical simulations for analyzing circulation, wave dynamics, water quality, and sediment transport utilizing tools such as ADCIRC, Delft3D, Delft3D-FM, SWAN, and XBeach.
- Performing statistical and probabilistic risk assessments related to coastal hazards.
- Organizing and interpreting engineering data, executing design calculations, and preparing engineering reports and technical documentation.
- Offering subject matter expertise for FEMA coastal flood risk assessments.
- Utilizing open-source tools to create numerical solutions and methodologies.
- Collaborating with colleagues across Michael Baker offices nationwide to ensure effective project execution.
- Supporting proposals aimed at various coastal engineering projects in the region.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Postgraduate degree in Coastal Engineering or a related discipline.
- Over 10 years of relevant experience.
- Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or the ability to obtain it within one year.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, and Fortran, along with experience in open-source software.
- Familiarity with FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program and experience in applying FEMA's coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping techniques.
- A proven track record of technical leadership, mentoring, and independent achievement.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
COMPENSATION
The estimated compensation range for this position is between $107,921 and $155,830. This range is a good faith estimate at the time of posting and actual compensation will be influenced by factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and work location.
