Special Education Assistant

Join the Santa Barbara Unified School District team as a Special Education Paraeducator I at La Cumbre Junior High School. We are seeking two dedicated individuals to work with students with extensive support needs.
Job Summary:This is a full-time position, 6 hours a day, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm when school is in session. The successful candidate will assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students with disabilities in a mild-to-moderate or inclusion setting.
Responsibilities:- Assist students with completing classroom assignments, homework projects, and tests
- Provide emotional support and answer questions to ensure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures
- Monitor student behavior and adherence to classroom or school rules and policies
- Collect data or work samples as directed by the teacher and/or perform clerical duties in support of classroom activities
- Assure the well-being of students by following health and safety practices and procedures
- Graduation from high school and one year of experience in an instructional setting
- Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification preferred
- Meet NCLB Paraeducator requirement by completing one of the following: SBUSD Paraeducator Math/Language Arts Assessment, California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST), or completion of two years of college (48 semester units) or A.A. degree (or higher)
This position involves inside work with no exposure to weather conditions and some outside work with exposure to weather conditions during outdoor activities or field trips. The successful candidate must be able to perform strenuous physical activities, including pushing, lifting (up to 25 pounds), transferring students in wheelchairs, and running or brisk walking to prevent students from eloping.
Benefits:This position is eligible for Language Services premium pay.
