Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled Laboratory Technician to join our team at Saint Luke's Hospital of Duluth. As a Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for collecting specimens and accurately performing laboratory tests. You will work collaboratively with Physician, nursing and clerical staff to provide quality patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect specimens and accurately perform laboratory tests
  • Work collaboratively with Physician, nursing and clerical staff to provide quality patient care
  • Perform related duties to support patient care, including vital signs and weight checks

Requirements:

  • High school graduate AND see Experience; OR graduate of accredited Medical Lab Technician program; OR graduate of accredited Medical Assistant program; OR graduate of accredited LPN or RN program OR Registered Radiologic Technologist (R) from American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • N/A with requisite education. If only high school graduate: Successful completion of St. Luke's probationary period as Clinic Phlebotomist
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: If the education requirement is met by being a graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program, then a CMA registration/certification from a Medicare recognized organization such as National HealthCareer Association, American Association for Medical Assistants, National Association or Medical Assistants, or American Medical Technologist is also required. Within ninety (90) days of hire, BLS certification with a designation of either BLS Provider or Healthcare Provider from either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or Military Training Network. Wisconsin Background Study upon hire and renewed per Wisconsin state law

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One (1) year, preferably in physician office lab setting
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of laboratory functions in a Physician office setting. Knowledge of Universal Precautions, MSDS, generally accepted safety practices and quality control practices for lab services. Knowledge of medical record documentation practices related to lab services. Knowledge of personal computing applications. Knowledge of customer relations principles. Ability to perform phlebotomies and fingerstick collections and obtain accurate vital signs. Ability to accurately complete waived and moderately complex lab tests. Ability to work independently under general administrative and medical direction. Ability to prioritize tasks without compromising patient care. Ability to demonstrate positive customer relations and present a professional image. Ability to work constructively with other persons. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Ability to do routine computer entry functions. Ability to write legibly, see and perform visual microscopic analysis, read, hear, walk and speak English
  • READING - Intermediate: Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • WRITING - Intermediate: Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, or procedures
  • SPEAKING - Intermediate: Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group situations or before groups of customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Intermediate Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals and to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw or interpret bar graphs to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
  • REASONING ABILITY - Intermediate Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES - Skilled at assessment and knowledgeable of growth and development. Provides appropriate care respective to the ages of the patients served per clinical environment
