The RN PRN role delivers professional nursing care to a diverse array of patients, performing nursing assessments, assisting with examinations and treatments, providing patient education, and maintaining accurate medical records.
This position ensures effective and efficient direct patient care, addressing patients with diverse and complex health needs.
The RN PRN collaborates and communicates with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate, coordinate, and uphold compassionate, efficient, and high-quality care, aiming for optimal treatment outcomes.
Demonstrating clinical proficiency, the RN PRN provides care, utilizes technology, administers medications, executes procedures, and manages emergencies, while advocating for patients and families to uphold patient rights.
This role includes leadership responsibilities, such as participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as a charge nurse or mentor to students or new staff, and potentially contributing to hospital-wide initiatives in collaboration with management.
Utilizes therapeutic communication techniques, including active listening and education, to build relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team, collaborating on care plans.
~ Contributes to teamwork by being aware of overall unit acuity, consistently offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for help. Collaborates to foster healthy workplace relationships. Seeks and provides guidance to the interprofessional healthcare team when appropriate, applying feedback to enhance patient outcomes.
~ Implements educational initiatives tailored to patient populations and unit processes; mentors and coaches fellow staff and students, which may include preceptorship. Engages in peer accountability to improve department metrics related to turnover, retention, and employee engagement on the unit-based scorecard.
Adheres to patient and family-centered care standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Conducts nursing assessments, assists with examinations and treatments, and maintains medical records. Practices in alignment with principles of cultural diversity and inclusion.
~ Develops, updates, and communicates care plans, including discharge planning, in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team, utilizing the nursing process. Exhibits self-motivation to manage time effectively, document care promptly, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks. Provides input into unit resource utilization, including capital and operational budget needs.
~ Contributes to meeting departmental financial targets on the unit-based scorecard by reducing length of stay, optimizing efficiency, and addressing other departmental specifications.
Identifies and proposes areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in patient care or unit operations using evidence-based practice literature. Offers innovative solutions through evidence-based practice and performance improvement projects, as well as shared governance activities.
~ Champions new care pathways or service line implementations to enhance community service. A Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited School of Nursing is required.
WORK EXPERIENCE
~ A minimum of two years of registered nursing experience in a healthcare setting is required.
RN-Temp - Registered Nurse - Temporary State Licensure within 60 days AND
Other credentials and certifications as defined by unit/service line
Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing skills assessments and performance evaluations as outlined in orientation and annual departmental competency checklists.
~ Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing the English language, necessary for performing essential job functions, particularly those impacting patient or employee safety or security.
~ Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and colleagues in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and the application of positive language principles.
~ Ability to work independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional care team, and patients and their families.
~ Familiarity with Microsoft products, including Outlook.
