Medical Laboratory Specialist

The Medical Technologist (MT/CLS) performs routine and complex analytical tests on human body fluids to provide accurate data to the healthcare team to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease states.
Key Responsibilities:
- Follows laboratory procedures for proper specimen collection and handling, ensuring patient identification, priority status, and hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies.
- Performs routine testing of in vitro biologic specimens according to standard operating procedures and instrument use, reporting results in a timely manner.
- Correlates clinical information and/or previous lab results, reporting discrepancies to the Laboratory Manager or designee, and consults with pathologists when necessary.
- Follows laboratory-established corrective action policies and procedures when test systems are not within acceptable levels of performance.
- Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration procedures related to each test performed.
- Adheres to laboratory quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
- Participates in proficiency testing and job competency/skills check programs.
- Maintains records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
- Reviews laboratory procedures under supervision as required.
- Attends and participates in continuing education programs to expand current knowledge and enhance professional excellence.
- Serves as a technical resource by participating in staff training.
- Adheres to confidentiality, compliance, and legal requirements.
- Maintains open communication with laboratory managers, pathologists, and other staff members to ensure optimal department operation.
- Regular and prompt work-site attendance.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Ability:
- Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (MT)/Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) or Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technicians-related science from an accredited program.
- Blood bank experience required.
- Phlebotomy skills required.
- Ortho Workstation and Ortho Optix experience preferred.
- Current knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment, and Laboratory Information Systems.
- 2 years of related experience is preferred.
- Computer literate.
- Ability to relate and work effectively with others.
- Ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
- Strong phlebotomy skills.
- Previous experience in a hospital environment is preferred.
- Aware of professional standards and performs in accordance with them.
