Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate School Nurse Substitute to join our team at Hanover County Public Schools. As a School Nurse Substitute, you will provide essential health services to students and staff, ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Administer individual mandated screenings, evaluate, refer, and follow up as required by Virginia school law and School Board policy.
  • Assist sick or injured students and staff, perform routine and emergency first aid, and administer medication to students with parental permission and a doctor's order.
  • Complete necessary forms and procedures for Bloodborne Pathogen exposure incidents and situations related to Workers Compensation.
  • Train staff to administer medications under certain circumstances in your absence or for field trips, ensuring proper documentation and maintaining records of CPR and First Aid trained staff.
  • Serve as a member of the School Crisis and Child Study Team, participate in wellness programs for staff, and attend all regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Supply and maintain the school clinic, checking first aid supplies and equipment daily, and securing medications including controlled substances as required.
  • Provide immunizations as dictated by School Board, manage outbreaks of infectious illnesses, and notify appropriate staff members of students with health concerns.
  • Refer additional health concerns to guidance counselors, school psychologists, physicians, Child Protective Services, school administrators, health department officials, and school 504 Coordinators.
  • Serve as a liaison with public health department, healthcare providers, and other community agencies, ensuring compliance with laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information.
  • Perform clerical duties related to school nurse functions, assist in enforcing rules and discipline, and perform student supervision duties as required.
  • Advise administrators on appropriate interventions to meet student needs and advise administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff on students with food allergies.
Qualifications

We require a valid license as a Registered Nurse (RN) and knowledge of health care and nursing techniques and principles, including pharmacology, state and federal regulations affecting school RN responsibilities, and basic record keeping processes.

You should also have knowledge of and ability to work with student IEPs and contribute to Section 504 processes, as well as the ability to administer First Aid and CPR, administer medications to students, and knowledge of attendant laws and policies for dispensing, delegating medication administration, and control of medications.
