School-Age Care Lead Counselor Job Description

At Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads, we are seeking a highly motivated and experienced School-Age Care Lead Counselor to join our team. As a key member of our youth development team, you will play a vital role in implementing high-quality child care and summer camp programs that meet the social-emotional needs of students aged 4-12 years.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement age-appropriate lessons that promote STREAM, literacy, health and safety, environmental awareness, character development, and incorporate the YMCA character values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty.
  • Supervise children at all times, ensuring no child is left unattended, and complete regular name-to-face counts.
  • Assist students with homework and provide enriching games/activities to support children with everyday challenges.
  • Assist in creating an attractive learning environment and promote a positive, FUN attitude that fosters teamwork and collaboration.
  • Adhere to all policies/procedures as set forth in the parent/guardian and employee handbooks.
  • Maintain an organized, safe learning environment, securing all ASYMCA materials and supplies.
  • Stay engaged with students and encourage problem-solving, conflict resolution, and self-regulation.
  • Clean and sanitize all toys, manipulatives, and classroom areas and complete all opening and closing procedures on the daily checklist.
  • Model healthy habits and behaviors.
  • Report suspected child abuse or neglect to the School-Age Care (SAC) Program Director immediately.
  • Document all incidents and injuries, following all policies and procedures as per licensing regulations specified by the Virginia Department of Education.
  • Communicate program concerns to the SAC administrator in a timely manner.
  • Check ASYMCA email daily and respond promptly to requests.
  • Dress professionally, wearing ASYMCA staff shirts with name badge, and maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Log work hours daily, using the electronic timecard (ADP) for approval by supervisor.
  • Serve as a substitute as needed.
