Gordian Biotechnology Trainee Program

South San Francisco, California, United States Gordian Biotechnology Full time

Are you prepared to engage in crucial work that will assist Gordian Biotechnology in identifying the most promising therapeutic targets for the creation of innovative pharmaceuticals? Become a part of our pioneering Trainee Program and contribute to our mission of combating age-related diseases.

We aspire for individuals to lead longer, healthier lives and to wake up each day feeling more capable than the last.

Our Vision:

Age-related illnesses arise from intricate causes, including interactions with the aging environment, and conventional ex vivo screening techniques have not yielded compelling targets or effective therapies.

To tackle this challenge, Gordian's platform facilitates in vivo Mosaic Screening, allowing us to deliver and evaluate hundreds of therapeutics within individual organisms.

We select the most clinically relevant Patient Avatars, whose age, physiology, and genomics closely mirror those of human patients.

Utilizing these and other proprietary methodologies, we can scale in vivo efficacy testing to a greater number of targets than ever explored by biopharmaceutical companies, right at the onset of the drug discovery process.

This enables us to develop and commercialize therapies with a higher likelihood of addressing the world's most lethal diseases, and ultimately, the aging process itself.

About the Position:

Our year-long trainee program offers a comprehensive experience in early-stage biotechnology, allowing you to hone practical laboratory skills while undertaking significant, hands-on projects that will greatly enhance your knowledge base.

You will play a vital role in assisting Gordian in pinpointing optimal therapeutic targets for new drug development.

This opportunity places you at the forefront of rapid innovation, providing an insider's perspective into the dynamic environment of a swiftly growing startup.

As we advance further along the drug development pipeline, you will actively engage in utilizing our platform to predict preclinical and clinical physiological responses through our proprietary in vivo Mosaic screens.

As a full-time team member, you will collaborate closely with disease specialists, gene therapists, and our platform and data teams, gaining diverse experience within our collaborative matrix team setting.

In this program, you will not only develop essential skills and experience as an early-career scientist but also as a biotechnology professional, gaining insights into what it takes to build and expand a biotech company.

You will learn about science and the business of science through company lunch and learns, monthly industry networking events, our exclusive speaker series featuring experienced industry and academic experts, and personalized time with our founders.

The year-long program aims to provide you with an experience that will inform your next career steps, whether that is at Gordian or through connections and networking opportunities in both industry and academia that will support whatever path you are passionate about pursuing.

Additionally, we offer competitive benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 4% 401K employer match, complimentary lunch three times a week, and much more.

Key Qualifications:
Degree/Major: Bachelor's or Master's degree with a focus in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field (e.g., Major in Computer Science, Minor in Biology).

Python/R: Strong proficiency in either Python (e.g., Pandas, Numpy, SciPy, etc.) or R (e.g., tidyr, dplyr, stringr, etc.), and scripting via collaborative notebook editors (e.g., Jupyter / RStudio / VS Code).

Linux/Github: Experience working collaboratively in a Linux computing environment, as well as maintaining a well-documented codebase on GitHub or similar platforms.

Data Structures: Experience with efficiently parsing files into data structures and their manipulation (e.g., mathematical operations, string/pattern matching, etc.), including data frames, matrices, lists, etc.

Data Visualization: Some experience creating clear visualizations to effectively communicate complex data using Python (e.g., seaborn or matplotlib) or R (e.g., ggplot, plotly).

What You'll Gain:

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be advantageous - but not mandatory. The most critical attributes are interest, intelligence, and a willingness to work diligently alongside equally dedicated colleagues.

Whatever your current knowledge level, we are eager to teach you and help you gain experience in areas that you are passionate about:

Large-scale Genomic Data Analysis: Managing high-dimensional next-generation sequencing data specifically related to single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of both diseased and healthy tissues, along with the associated workflows, tools, and packages for performing quality control and statistical analyses (e.g., using Scanpy, Seurat).

Designing Graphical User Interfaces: Building and hosting fully functional "front-end" web applications (e.g., with RShiny or Dash) that allow users to navigate and interact with our datasets across multiple projects.

Data Visualization / Communication: Translating analysis outputs into visualizations, tables, etc., that effectively document and communicate results to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Cloud Computing: Proficiency in working within a Linux cloud environment (using AWS & Google Cloud) for data retrieval and storage as part of existing pipelines.

Cross-disciplinary Collaboration: Engaging at the intersection of biology and software engineering, closely collaborating with disease and platform experts to broaden your domain knowledge and exposure to experimental design and strategic planning.

Understanding of Startup Operations and Dynamics: Functioning in a culture where agility and calculated risks to advance scientific progress are the norm.

Entrepreneurial Spirit: Demonstrating traits such as innovation, resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking.

About You:

You seek an opportunity to perform at your best, immerse yourself, and excel alongside individuals who will inspire you and whom you will be excited to collaborate with.

You desire to play a significant role in an early-stage startup: A fast-paced environment filled with both uncertainty and new challenges, demanding relentless resourcefulness, yet brimming with opportunities and excitement.

You are enthusiastic about utilizing cutting-edge technology to identify the best therapeutic targets and transform those into pharmaceuticals.

You are organized and have a proven track record of managing and collaborating on time-sensitive projects across multiple teams.

Our Mission:
Our mission is ambitious, and the journey will be filled with both challenges and excitement.

Two principles define the Gordian experience: 1) We operate as a team, taking ownership of our roles and trusting one another. 2) We strive for exceptional outcomes, and in doing so, enhance our skills and capabilities.

Team - Trusting one another begins with transparency. We establish clear objectives, visibly connecting individuals and teams to our company goals.

This empowers each of us to make independent decisions about our work, understanding how they will impact the larger picture.

Our communication is open, and our team is oriented towards mutual support.

We provide assistance for each other's projects, both experimentally and through "pre-mortem" meetings to discuss potential failure modes and experimental design.

We give and receive feedback, share mistakes, and seek help.

Exceptional - Each day, we ask ourselves, "Could this process or outcome be even better?"

Understanding our overarching mission, we pursue what we believe will yield the most progress and do not shy away from significant challenges or unknown territories, but instead find ways to excel.

Our colleagues are remarkable, both in their expertise and as individuals. They motivate us to keep pace, to not let them down, and to inspire in return.
