Position Overview
The Aerospace Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) represents a diverse scientific entity dedicated to fostering innovative research and development for an expanding space sector. PSL's influence is amplified through a varied research portfolio that integrates foundational scientific inquiry with advanced technology development, catering to a wide array of clients. Our unique capability to collaborate with all stakeholders—government, industry, and academia—enables us to devise novel solutions for the most pressing challenges in contemporary and future technology applications.
The Chemical Propulsion and Environmental Science section within the Propulsion Science Department conducts laboratory experiments utilizing multiple vacuum and high-energy testing facilities. As a Research Associate III - Propulsion Systems, you will provide direct support to scientists and engineers in both the development and execution of experiments, as well as in the management of related laboratory operations. You will be tasked with integrating activities within a complete laboratory system and/or across multiple integrations, alongside custom testing activities. These responsibilities include the design, setup, data collection, and analysis, guided by senior personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct technical assessments, research and development, risk mitigation, and anomaly investigation through laboratory experimentation and analysis.
- Support research scientists and engineers within the Propulsion Science Department and collaborate with other internal support teams as necessary.
- Utilize a diverse range of hands-on skills to achieve project objectives, ensuring the success of departmental initiatives.
- Engage in the design, fabrication, instrumentation, and troubleshooting of new experiments, while maintaining existing setups.
- Play a crucial role in the operational readiness of our chemical propulsion testing infrastructure.
Qualifications for Success
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Chemical, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering.
- A minimum of three years of experience in a research or industrial environment.
- Basic fabrication skills, including cutting, drilling, and tapping of various materials.
- Proficiency in mechanical CAD and collaboration with precision machining shops.
- Knowledge of tube fitting and bending techniques.
- Familiarity with electrical and data acquisition systems, including measurement hardware and software.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to meet customer requirements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications
It would be advantageous if you possess:
- A Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Over six years of experience in a research or industrial setting.
- Experience with rocket testing facilities and chemical laboratories.
- Knowledge of handling propellants and high-energy materials.
- Experience with laboratory glassware and safety procedures.
