Assistant Prosecutor

The Deputy States Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of juvenile and abuse & neglect cases within the jurisdiction. This role involves collaboration with law enforcement and community members regarding involuntary mental health commitments. The position also supports the States Attorney and Chief Deputy States Attorney in handling adult criminal cases and civil matters on behalf of the County.

• Manage a caseload primarily focused on low-level felonies and juvenile cases.
• Assist law enforcement in matters related to mental health commitments.
• Engage in civil representation for the County.
• Prepare and present cases in legal proceedings.
• Conduct legal research and draft necessary legal documents.
• Review police reports and evidence to determine appropriate charges.
• Coordinate and prepare witnesses for court appearances.
• Stay updated on changes in laws and regulations affecting juvenile and criminal law.
• Communicate effectively with all parties involved in cases, including victims and law enforcement.
• Provide recommendations regarding custody and restitution matters.
• Represent the office at various public and inter-governmental events.
• Educate and train volunteers and law enforcement on legal processes.
• Address inquiries from the public regarding legal concerns.

Education and Experience:

Must possess a Juris Doctorate degree and be licensed to practice law in the State of South Dakota. Experience in prosecution or litigation is preferred, ideally ranging from 0 to 3 years.
