The Surgical Services Registered Nurse is accountable for delivering professional nursing care to patients undergoing surgical or endoscopic procedures, ensuring a comprehensive patient-centered approach through the application of the nursing process.


Job Relationships
Reports directly to the Nurse Manager of Operative Services.

Key Responsibilities

Nurses will be trained to operate in various departments within the facility, utilizing essential nursing skills and techniques to meet patient needs and ensure high-quality care. Annual competencies for specific areas of work must be completed within the designated timeframe.

  • ADMISSION: Welcome patients and guide them in changing into appropriate attire. Conduct pre-operative assessments, document findings on the relevant chart forms, and administer pre-operative orders (e.g., medications, IVs). Provide pre-operative education to patients and their significant others. Collaborate with other healthcare team members regarding patient care.
  • POST-ANESTHESIA CARE: Evaluate and monitor patients during Phase I Recovery. Complete necessary documentation. Administer medications as prescribed. Prepare and restock supplies as needed. Transition patients to Phase II Recovery once they have sufficiently recovered from anesthesia, following established protocols.
  • DISCHARGE: Assess and monitor patients during Phase II Recovery. Administer medications as prescribed. Complete required chart forms. Assist patients in preparing for discharge and provide home care instructions along with educational materials.

Discharge patients according to the surgeon's orders to a responsible individual, adhering to the guidelines outlined in the Policy and Procedure Manual. Maintain a clean and organized facility at all times. Restock supplies as indicated on a daily basis. Conduct daily checks of emergency equipment and medications to ensure everything is present and functional. Complete post-operative follow-up calls as necessary. Comply with the incident reporting policies and procedures. Adhere to all training and compliance requirements as mandated by the organization. Provide exceptional customer service and uphold the organization's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
Perform additional duties as assigned.



Education and Experience
Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
Three to five years of relevant nursing experience is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications
Current RN licensure in the State of Illinois.
PALS certification per American Heart Association guidelines is required within six months of employment.
ACLS certification per American Heart Association guidelines is required within six months of employment.
CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines is required within 30 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Maintain professional conduct at all times.
Possess manual dexterity to operate equipment and tools.
Ability to perform physical tasks such as stooping, bending, and lifting.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Present a well-groomed appearance.

Working Environment
Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, tissues, and infectious diseases, as well as potentially hazardous materials.
Occasional heavy lifting may be required.
