Job Summary

The Transportation Support Specialist will provide critical support to bus drivers in ensuring the safety and well-being of special needs students while on board, loading, or unloading the school bus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist drivers with loading and unloading students, including the use of mechanical lifts to safely transport wheelchairs.
  • Help drivers secure wheelchairs, mobility chairs, and other equipment to ensure safe transportation.
  • Develop and implement emergency response procedures and assist in evacuation situations.
  • Monitor fragile and medically classified students, maintaining knowledge of each student's individual needs.
  • Report any unsafe acts or conditions that require driver attention.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with state and local laws and policies.
  • Communicate effectively with school staff, parents, and the public.
  • Attend required safety meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

Requirements

  • No prior education or experience required; previous experience working with students with disabilities is preferred.
  • Must successfully complete School Bus Aide training and other mandated training as required by student need.
  • Have or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification.

Working Conditions

  • Work in extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, wet, and humid conditions.
  • Potential exposure to airborne and blood-borne pathogens, chemical irritants, combustible materials, and electrical materials.

Physical Demands

  • Lift and/or move up to 40 pounds regularly, and occasionally team lift and/or move a student with disabilities.
  • May require lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching, stooping, or crouching.
  • Requires ability to move and control an adult-sized wheelchair.
