Job Summary

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Technician I to provide daily care of research animals and assist with research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator and/or supervisor.

This is a first-level position in a series of three veterinary technician roles, and the selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining clean cages and racks, preparing media and solutions, and assisting with surgery and microsurgery on animals.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in animal handling and care, as well as excellent communication and analytical skills. Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and proficiency in using software tools such as Google Suite and Microsoft Office are also desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care of research animals, including cleaning cages and racks, preparing food and water, and monitoring animal health.
  • Assist with research projects, including performing procedures under the supervision of the Attending Veterinarian or designated Clinical Veterinarian.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal care and research activities, including data entry and reporting.
  • Train research and DLAR staff members in animal handling, restraint, medication administration, sample collection, health evaluation, and euthanasia.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including attendance of and participation in required training for the role.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years of experience in animal care or a related field required.
  • Knowledge of basic science principles and math, as well as standard laboratory techniques.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Good communication and analytical skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and proficiency in using software tools such as Google Suite and Microsoft Office desirable.

Work Environment

This position will take place primarily in a laboratory environment, with occasional travel to other locations as needed. The selected candidate will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and comply with the Institute's occupational health and safety requirements.
