Role Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant I provides essential clinical and administrative assistance to healthcare providers and team members in an outpatient clinic environment. This role operates under the clinical oversight of the provider for patient care tasks and under the general guidance of the assigned manager/supervisor for administrative duties.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conducts patient intake and rooming processes, gathering vital data such as vital signs, height, weight, and information pertinent to the patient's visit.
2. Collects comprehensive patient and family information, including medical and social history.
3. Reviews the patient's current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy.
4. Assists the provider during examinations, treatments, and procedures as needed.
5. Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy tasks.
6. Administers medications under the supervision of a provider.
7. Conducts tests, such as EKGs and eye examinations, as directed by a provider.
8. Evaluates patient records to identify necessary routine health screenings.
9. Ensures that examination and procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies, equipment, forms, and educational materials.
10. Provides patients with after-visit instructions, follow-up care, self-care guidelines, or educational resources as directed.
11. Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains examination and treatment areas.
12. Cleans and sterilizes medical instruments.
13. Aids in patient registration, check-in/check-out processes, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
14. Answers clinic phone calls and assists with in-basket tasks under the guidance of a provider or nurse.
15. Responds to emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse.
Additional Information
Education Requirements:
● High school diploma or GED is required.
● Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting program is strongly preferred but not mandatory.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Certification as a Medical Assistant by recognized organizations is required.
● Basic Life Support Certification from an accredited provider is mandatory.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Previous experience as a medical assistant or in a medical assistant externship is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● Ability to perform essential job functions as outlined.
● Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
● Capacity to engage positively with patients and families and collaborate effectively with staff and providers.
● Proficiency in using a computer for documentation in electronic medical records.
