Position Title: Operating Room Surgical Specialist
Work Schedule: Primarily 8-hour shifts with occasional 12-hour shifts during weekends
- Monday-Friday; 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
- Monday-Friday; 11:00 am - 7:30 pm
On-Call Requirements: On-call shifts every third weekend, one summer holiday, and one winter holiday
Full-Time Equivalent (FTE): 0.8

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Operating Room Surgical Specialist plays a vital role in patient care by managing surgical instruments during procedures and performing various tasks related to the preparation, processing, and organization of surgical tools and supplies under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role involves providing care to patients across different age groups.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Employs infection control techniques and ensures compliance with aseptic practices and safety protocols.
- Primarily acts as the instrument handler during diverse surgical procedures.
- Prepares and organizes the Operating Room equipment, instruments, and supplies.
- Serves as the first assistant to the surgeon.
- Anticipates and fulfills the surgeon's requirements for instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Recognizes emergency situations and responds promptly.
- Manages contaminated instruments and supplies throughout and after surgical procedures.
- Participates in the on-call system for emergency and urgent cases.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Engages in the education and orientation of surgical staff.
- Aids the circulating nurse in delivering direct patient care.
- Participates in surgeries outside the designated department.
- Occasionally works in the instrument or utility room area.
- Maintains inventory levels in the Operating Room suites.
- Assumes on-call responsibilities as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Certification within six months of hire or validation of completion of a surgical military training program for new hires.
- CPR Certification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
One (1) year of experience as an Operating Room scrub.
