Job Summary

The Director, Legal Strategy will be responsible for managing, supporting, and mentoring teams of graduate and professional students in designing and implementing research and consulting projects in the P-12 education sector. This includes team management, strategy development, professional development of students, quality assurance, and collaboration with CPRL leadership and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Team Management: Manage teams of four to six graduate students for four- to ten-month consulting engagements, setting up project management structures, promoting team cohesion, and overseeing the creation of project plans and task allocation.
  2. Strategy Development and Thought Leadership: Collaborate with CPRL leadership and staff to design research and consulting strategy and methodology for projects, execute and adapt strategy and methodology based on project type, gathered information, and client feedback, and communicate strategy, vision, methodology, and outcomes to relevant stakeholders.
  3. Professional Development of Students: Develop student skills and dispositions necessary for research and consulting projects, provide leadership opportunities for students within the team structure, provide ongoing feedback to students, and collaboratively establish professional growth goals with the team and individual students and monitor progress towards these goals.
  4. Quality Assurance: Ensure all work products are high quality and delivered on time.
  5. Liaison with Client Organizations: Serve as the primary point of contact with clients, develop project scope of work, manage student-client interaction, and document all changes in project scope.
  6. Communication with CPRL Leadership: Update and receive feedback from CPRL leadership about project work, provide written and oral updates about project and student progress, surface issues for additional CPRL support, and communicate feedback from leadership to student teams and integrate it into project work.
  7. Collaboration with CPRL Staff: Work closely with Associate Directors leading analogous or interconnected projects, contribute to the design and execution of project-related professional learning experiences and materials for students.
  8. Collaboration with Fellow Directors: Meet with Associate Directors about project work, collaboratively troubleshoot problems, engage in discussions and activities to ensure consistent expectations for students.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required and advanced degree in education, law (JD, LLM), management or business, policy, or social sciences required, plus 5-7 years of significant experience.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with a preference for candidates with expertise in modeling and analyzing qualitative and/or quantitative data and in matching research methodologies to client and project requirements.
  • Intellectual capacity to think strategically in a fast-paced environment, understand multiple perspectives, learn about new topics, problem solve, and develop responsive solutions under changing circumstances.
  • Ability to respond to and integrate feedback from both peers and supervisors, ability to communicate feedback to individuals and teams in a clear and productive manner.
  • Experience as a P-12 teacher or experience teaching/mentoring young professionals preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization, and communication skills.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills.
  • Must be able to work with diverse constituencies and support an inclusive work environment.
