Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Central Sterile Processing Liaison to join our team at DMC Receiving Hospital. As a key member of our surgical team, you will be responsible for coordinating the oversight of surgical instruments and supplies between the OR and Central Sterile Processing (CSP) to ensure efficient case flow.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assist the Operating Room staff in preparing the OR suite for surgery by verifying instrument trays are available prior to case start times.
  2. Transport sterile instruments and supplies to the operating room using appropriate standards and techniques, and perform package integrity checks to ensure package and/or wrapper integrity.
  3. Monitor case flow during the day, track instrument needs, and notify CSP personnel in advance of any possible addition/emergent instrument needs.
  4. Remove soiled case carts or un-sterile instrumentation and scopes from the operating room to be returned to CSP for processing.
  5. Assist with planning and coordination of instrument turnarounds with the CSP staff, and communicate essential instrumentation information to the surgical team.
  6. Verify instrument needs for the next day and ensure they have been cleaned, wrapped, sterilized, and available for use.
  7. Demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of surgical instruments and identify when instruments are broken, damaged, or not functioning as designed.
  8. Communicate suggestions related to surgeon preference card changes based on set usage to help ensure availability.
  9. Work with the OR staff to identify instrumentation related to tray additions and reconfigurations, building surgeon specialty sets, etc.
  10. Respond to problem calls from Surgery throughout the day as required.
  11. Perform required daily audits of completed and post-op case carts, and provide completed audit sheets to the CSP data entry clerk.
  12. Participate in education of healthcare providers related to receipt, inspection, inventory, storage & distribution of instrumentation and medical supplies in Processing, function of specialty instrumentation, problem resolution of frequently encountered instrument function issues, and instrument maintenance program.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A high school graduate or equivalent, with an Associate's degree preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language.
  • 3 years of Sterile Processing Technician experience, with 5 years preferred.
  • Certified Sterile Processing Technician through CBSPD or IAHCSMM.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with various hospital personnel and outside vendors.
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments as well as cleaning and sterilization processes.
  • Understanding of the care and handling of surgical instrumentation.
  • Ability to push, pull objects weighing up to 450 lbs, and lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to provide high-level technical computer support and use.
  • Ability to use Windows-based applications such as Excel, Word, and other software in order to perform essential functions of the job.
