Job Overview

The selected engineer will collaborate with a skilled and forward-thinking team to assess, revise, and create substation standards essential for facilitating substation capital initiatives, including distribution and transmission interconnection projects, as well as emerging technologies. These standards are crucial for both new and existing distribution and transmission substations across National Grid's operational territory, which encompasses voltage levels ranging from 4160V to 345kV. Additionally, this role will contribute to the training of substation engineers, fostering talent development within the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the formulation, technical content, and execution of National Grid's Substation Engineering and Design philosophy, including standards, guidelines, equipment specifications, and procedures; identify potential risks and implement measures to ensure adherence to standards and regulatory obligations.
  • Provide technical assistance to various departments such as Engineering, Design, Operations, IT, and Construction.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and ensure that design-to-value principles are consistently integrated through standardization.
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in technical discussions to facilitate the development of standards and training programs.
  • Participate in conferences and seminars focused on new technologies and industry standards to keep substation standards aligned with technological advancements, promoting future adaptation and growth.
  • Address technical challenges that may arise during the updating and development of standards.
  • Conduct calculations and studies (grounding, AC & DC system sizing, lightning protection, lighting, rigid bus design, etc.) to support the design basis of substation standards.
  • Prepare detailed written and oral reports on technical issues, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations.
  • Review single line diagrams, elementaries, physical plans and elevations, conduit and cable schedules, lighting, lightning, bill of materials, etc., including manufacturers' documentation.
  • Investigate and support the integration of innovative technologies within the substation sector, including pilot program support.
  • Travel as necessary to facilitate manufacturer qualifications and attend conferences.
  • Information Gathering: Diligently establish facts by probing deeper, asking insightful questions, and challenging initial responses from various sources to ensure designs are fit for purpose.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering License is preferred.
  • A Master's degree is advantageous.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience (6 years preferred) in an engineering discipline related to power systems, engineering, and/or operations and maintenance.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Familiarity with software tools such as SAP, CDEGS, Bentley Microstation, AUTO-CAD, Microsoft Project, Primavera, Tableau, PowerPlan, Cascade, and/or similar applications.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, safety regulations, and existing electrical design codes, including but not limited to: substation construction and maintenance practices, electric utility practices, substation materials and equipment, grounding and lightning study analysis, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA 70, ASTM, NEC, NESC, and NYS Building Code.
  • Capability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Ability to navigate physically in and around an electrical substation.
  • Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record is required.
  • Willingness to travel throughout service territories and work extended hours as necessary, including during system emergencies.

Additional Information

Salary range: $124,000 - $146,000. This position offers a career path with opportunities for advancement within and across bands as you gain experience, expertise, and develop technical skills.
