Mission of the Unit: The Pediatric Surgery Division within the Department of Surgery is dedicated to advancing medical science through innovative research and the education of both undergraduate and graduate students in pediatric surgery. The Department promotes a robust environment for research and professional development, essential for the growth of faculty and students alike. The Division is committed to fostering diversity among its faculty, staff, and students, ensuring a rich and inclusive educational experience. Faculty members are also expected to contribute service to their professional community and the broader university environment.

Primary Objective of this Role: The Department of Surgery is seeking to fill an open rank, non-tenure track faculty position focused on pediatric surgery, with a particular emphasis on pediatric trauma and the management of programs and personnel to enhance performance. The selected candidate will take on the role of Medical Director for the Pediatric Trauma Program. This program is recognized as the first Pediatric Trauma Center designated in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is verified by the American College of Surgeons multiple times. Additionally, the faculty member will engage in the general surgical practice of the division and will have teaching responsibilities at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching: The faculty member will be responsible for educating students in all aspects of pediatric surgery.

Research: This role necessitates the development of a successful research initiative in collaboration with various disciplines, aiming for independent funding as a principal investigator.

Clinical Duties: The faculty will oversee the pediatric trauma program, managing daily operations and coordinating with pediatric trauma staff to ensure optimal patient care and performance enhancement. Establishing a thriving clinical practice in general pediatric surgery is also expected. Clinical responsibilities may involve collaboration with affiliated community hospitals.

Additional Duties: The faculty member will participate in departmental and university committees as required, and engage in professional activities within their field.

Required Qualifications:
Board certified or board eligible in general surgery and pediatric surgery Completion of an ACGME accredited fellowship in pediatric surgery Ability to navigate a complex, matrixed environment with high emotional intelligence Commitment to teaching and practicing in an academic environment Proven experience in fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member is essential Preferred Qualifications:
Board eligibility or certification in pediatric critical care Previous experience in pediatric trauma administration
