The initial salary range for this position is influenced by various factors, including expertise, experience, education, certifications, and geographical location. The comprehensive salary range for this role reflects the competitive market value for all employees in similar positions across the national landscape and offers opportunities for advancement as employees develop within their roles. Certain positions at The Ladders may have a corresponding compensation structure that includes commission and/or bonus earnings, which vary based on multiple criteria outlined in the compensation plan for the role.
Position Overview
The Ladders is seeking a Surety Underwriter to become part of our Core Contract team.
In this role, you will engage in marketing, underwriting, and servicing independent agents, brokers, and contract surety accounts within a designated territory. Utilizing your exceptional relationship-building skills, you will foster and maintain positive connections, focusing on relationship development rather than mere transactional sales. Your business and financial acumen will be essential in conducting primary credit underwriting and financial/risk analysis, offering recommendations, and making informed decisions regarding new and existing accounts. This position presents an excellent opportunity for a seasoned and self-driven surety professional aiming to advance their career with a leading surety firm that prioritizes its employees and clients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage with agents and brokers from your assigned territory to solicit business submissions through marketing initiatives and educate agency representatives on The Ladders' surety policies, procedures, appetite, and requirements. Act in a consultative role to review agency accounts and performance.
- Underwrite new and existing account submissions utilizing the authority granted by the Chief Underwriting Officer. Handle complex accounts as appropriate, making thorough evaluations of a customer's financial, technical, organizational, and management capabilities, as well as subjective assessments based on data insights.
- Conduct analytical evaluations of financial statements on both a static and trend basis, determining the current and historical financial status of accounts while monitoring financial positions through quarterly statements and relevant data.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with agents and brokers, overseeing a portfolio of contract surety business within your defined territory. Meet production, marketing, and profitability targets as established by management and assist in formulating marketing strategies.
- Stay informed about The Ladders' product offerings and identify cross-selling opportunities with agents, engaging and referring appropriate parties as necessary.
- Manage all underwriting, accounting, and workflow issues within the framework of surety policies and procedures.
- Continuously evaluate the qualitative aspects of both new and existing business assigned to you, utilizing self-audit programs and financial ratio analysis reports. Make recommendations to management for appropriate lines of authority to be submitted to the Home Office.
- Assess and identify changes in various business aspects, including work programs, financial strength criteria, and exposure analyses, coordinating issues with Home Office staff and Bond Managers.
- Assist in evaluating business continuity arrangements and funding mechanisms to prevent financial strain on customers in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
- In cases where credit recommendations deviate from standard underwriting practices, apply sound reasoning and business logic to reach decisions as authorized, effectively documenting this logic and communicating it to senior underwriting staff as necessary.
- Provide direction for topics to be discussed in meetings with agents, clients, and other stakeholders as required.
- Prepare and implement guidelines for managing workflows and addressing unique accounting or billing situations.
- May mentor junior staff as appropriate.
- Undertake special projects and additional duties as assigned.
- A BA/BS in Business Administration or a related field is typically required.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience is expected, with a preference for 7 or more years of surety underwriting experience or equivalent related business experience.
- Proven analytical skills to assess and evaluate underwriting risks within the scope of responsibility.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information clearly in both written and oral formats for underwriting or training purposes.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for interacting with agents, brokers, CPAs, bankers, attorneys, and others.
- Must possess a strong understanding of complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes to manage these issues effectively.
- A demonstrated track record in business development is required.
