Overview

The Technical Project Leader is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and exercising authority over the planning, organization, control, integration, and successful completion of engineering projects within their designated area. This role may involve providing technical support in design, material procurement, construction, and testing of experimental models and prototypes. The work encompasses a broad scope and may entail overall project accountability, often acting as the lead on various initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and structures engineering programs in alignment with project specifications and organizational standards.
  • Evaluates product designs to ensure adherence to engineering principles, organizational standards, relevant regulatory requirements, and customer contract stipulations.
  • Facilitates coordination of activities related to technical advancements, scheduling, and resolution of engineering design and testing challenges.
  • Engages with both internal and external project stakeholders throughout the design and development phases, including the transition to production.
  • Conducts and/or oversees the design, execution, and documentation of experiments and testing protocols to confirm that product designs or subsystems meet specified requirements and validate intended use.
  • Oversees and assesses the selection of prototyping techniques and methodologies to produce components or subsystems that effectively meet overall project objectives and timelines.
  • Reviews project team recommendations regarding manufacturing processes and supplier choices based on project specifications and organizational standards.
  • Directs and manages prototype or pilot-run procurement activities in collaboration with engineering and other stakeholders such as purchasing and operations.
  • Drafts and/or reviews documentation of development activities in accordance with formal Quality Systems, including product requirement definitions, project planning, design outputs (production drawings, bills of materials, procedures, specifications, inspection criteria, etc.), design reviews, verification and validation processes, design change control, and risk assessments.
  • Monitors and manages expenditures within the constraints of the project budget.
  • Communicates project progress, significant issues, and mitigation strategies to other project stakeholders, engineering management, and executive leadership.
  • Assists with related special projects as necessary.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering (Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical, etc.) or a related technical discipline.
  • 5-10 years of experience in engineering or technical roles, with 3-5 years in managing product development projects, showcasing the ability to inspire and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with one or more complete product development cycles, including the formulation of customer and engineering requirements.
  • Proficient technical writing skills.
  • A meticulous approach to design, strategy, and documentation.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies is preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience in medical device development and quality documentation is a plus.

Work Environment

In this role, the employee is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
